Osgood-Schlatter disease: Causes, symptoms, and treatment

When children and adolescents complain of knee pain below the kneecap, Osgood-Schlatter disease may be the cause. In the article, learn more about the symptoms and causes and what can help with Osgood-Schlatter disease.

What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Osgood-Schlatter disease is an irritation at the tendon insertion of the patellar tendon, usually caused by growth-related factors. The patellar tendon connects the lower tip of the kneecap to the tibia. This region is near an open growth plate and is therefore particularly sensitive.

Causes of Osgood-Schlatter Disease

During growth spurts, increased tension on the sensitive area around the patellar tendon insertion occurs, which is why the condition predominantly appears during growth. If additional stress from sports or intense movement is added, it can lead to inflammation in this area.

Symptoms include pain below the knee. Sometimes bony protrusions can also be seen.

How can NUMO help with Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Although the affected areas in Osgood-Schlatter disease usually recover on their own after growth, acute symptoms are often persistent and disruptive in daily life. At NUMO, we analyze the entire movement process . With a custom-fitted Shoe Insert , we can correct any misalignments and stabilize the foot and leg axis. This calms the irritated area.

This reduces pain and helps prevent secondary issues due to pain-induced misalignment. For Osgood-Schlatter disease, a brace – a type of "clamp" – below the kneecap can also provide relief. You can also find these at NUMO.
